Wincing Clover is a Prototype Augment. When obtained, the player's amount of available Rerolls will be set to 9999, giving them effectively infinite Rerolls. However, whenever the player rerolls an item, they will take damage based on how many Rerolls it cost them. The damage starts at 40 for 1 Reroll, plus an additional 20 for every extra Reroll that was used. This damage can kill you if you attempt to reroll an item without enough health or armor, although items capable of preventing damage do still work. If multiple copies of this prototype are obtained, there is no additional effect, and if any copy was acquired with Prototype Resonator, the effects of that copy will take priority.
With Prototype Resonator, the damage taken when rerolling an item is halved.
Collecting System Restore will change the effect, instead granting 1 free Reroll per item, or 2 if
Wincing Clover was acquired with
Prototype Resonator. Free Rerolls are not given for Prototype Augments.
Interactions
- Damage taken from
Wincing Clover will not cause the player to lose stacks of the buff given by
Remnant of Spirit or to lose nuts with
Market Fluctuations.
- The negative effects of
Vexing Clover and
Wincing Clover will still apply to free Rerolls granted by a
System Restore if one if them is obtained after the
System Restore.
- If the player obtains a
System Restore with both
Vexing Clover and
Wincing Clover in their inventory, they will be granted 2 free Rerolls for non-Prototype items (4 if both were obtained with
Prototype Resonator).
- When appearing as an offer from shops and the Smuggler due to the effects of
Madness Fountain, this prototype costs 2 nuts and 1
Scrapbit respectively.
Trivia
Wincing Clover is based on the removed Prototype Blessing
Clover.
- Unlike most sources of self-damage,
Wincing Clover mostly acts like standard damage, though it does ignore i-frames. This means that the self-damage can be blocked by damage negation effects like
Zookeeper's Phalanx and
Earthmetal Plating, and can be increased by items such as
Flaring Hysteria and
Violence Enhancer. Interestingly, the invincibility effect of
Vagrant's Yearn also prevents the self-damage.
Bugs
- If the player acquires
Prototype Resonator when they already have
Wincing Clover, and then acquires a
System Restore, they will be given 2 free Rerolls per non-prototype item rather than 1.
