Zen Primus is a boss who serves as the Guardian of Burning Temple. Upon defeat, he drops Zen Mortar.png Zen Mortar for Nina, or Zen Ascent.png Zen Ascent for Ace.

Attacks

Zen Primus primarily moves around the arena by jumping and using his wide variety of melee attacks. In the first phase, his attacks include:

  • A ground pound that causes six fireballs to rise up from the ground, three to each side of Zen Primus. The fireballs' locations are indicated by a red ! mark about a half-second before they appear.
  • A rising uppercut that stops once it hits the ceiling, creating a fan of five fireballs from the impact point.
  • A three-part combo move that launches three fireballs in a 30-degree cone straight forward on the first punch, three more fireballs aimed diagonally upward in a similar cone, and ending with a fan of five fireballs that spread out over a 90-degree cone
  • Punching the ground, creating a fan of five fireballs from the impact point.
  • A simple jump, with him turning around and moving back in the other direction if the player moves to his other side when he reaches the apex of his jump.

Upon reaching about 50% HP, Zen Primus will go into his second phase, where he hovers to the center of the arena and retreats into a completely invulnerable shield, and four shield statues will become active. The shield statues may be destroyed during this phase. During this phase, three waves of fireball attacks will be summoned from the walls, ceiling and floor, with each wave being longer than the last. The fireball attacks will be warned in advance with a row of red ! marks about a half-second before they are fired. Between waves, Zen Primus will lower his shield, allowing the player to get a single combo's worth of attacks in. The phase will end after all three waves of attacks happen, but will end early if all the shield statues are destroyed.

Once all four statues are destroyed, Zen Primus go into an enraged state and begin the initial phase of the fight once more. However, while enraged, Zen Primus will attack much faster than usual, and the fireballs from his shield phase will still continue to appear.

Tips

  • Many of the horizontal grounded fireballs are elevated from the ground somewhat, making it relatively trivial to dash under them to completely avoid taking damage.
  • When playing as Ace, Ryuusei.png Ryuusei (dropped from Capital Punishment) will deal 999 damage to the statues that generate Zen Primus's shield during his second phase, which is usually enough to instantly destroy them.
  • Due to the amount of fireball spam that can potentially happen, it is recommended to bring some form of defensive ability (Ace's Echo Shell.png Echo Shell, Nina's Negation Pulse.png Negation Pulse, Orbital Barrier.png Orbital Barrier or the Armatort's Pound.png Armatort's Pound and Oxjack's Guile.png Oxjack's Guile cores).
  • If you have Grandmaster.png Grandmaster equipped as Ace, it is possible (but difficult) to fling the shield statues into Zen Primus for big damage.

Trivia

  • Zen Primus resembles a traditional Chinese Monk.
  • The pre-battle animations before the Name Introduction of the boss shows Zen Primus putting down a glass china cup of tea.
  • The Name Introduction and the death animation for Zen Primus is the same with Zen Primus supposedly screaming in rage. The only difference being that Zen Primus would most likely be in raged form before getting killed, which ensures Zen Primus is red instead of their normal color.
  • Pre-1.0 release, Zen Primus was the only boss that had dialogue. If minibosses are included, then he shared this trait with Kur and Delta.
