There are four main playable characters in 20XX. Nina and Ace are available from the start, while Hawk and Draco are purchased as DLC (or unlocked by completing a run on Console). Characters can be switch to in the hub by going to their respective character capsule and interacting with it. Additionally, Revenant versions of the four playable characters can be unlocked by beating a run with 3 (or more) Skulls active.

Playable Characters

Nina

Nina

Starting Gear N-Buster (20XX).png N-Buster

Nina is one of the main protagonists of the game, serving as the game's primary ranged fighter. She starts off with the N-Buster (20XX).png N-Buster, which fires small yellow pellets. She has blonde hair, a blue helmet, blue armour, and due to the aforementioned N-Buster, only one hand which has a yellow glove. In terms of gameplay, she and Ace play similarly to X and Zero from the Mega Man X games, the former of each pair being ranged fighters and the latter of each pair excelling in melee combat.

Unlike Ace, Nina's weapons generally only have piercing properties when charged with the {Primary Attack} button.

Additionally, for weapons other than the Scatterblast (20XX).png Scatterblast, bosses will take damage from up to three shots in rapid succession before they gain boss invulnerability frames. (For Scatterblast, bosses will take damage from up to an entire burst of projectiles, but additional bursts during a boss' i-frames will have no effect)

Primary Weapons

Ace

Ace

Starting Gear A-Saber (20XX).png A-Saber

Ace is the game's other main protagonist, serving as the game's primary melee fighter. He starts off with the A-Saber (20XX).png A-Saber, which attacks with a three-swing combo. All of his weapons have enemy-piercing properties, and can attack certain parts of enemies which Nina cannot. Ace has red armour and black gloves, and his eyes appear more robotic.

Additionally, for weapons other than the Plasma Blender, bosses will take damage from an entire combo from a weapon before starting their invulnerabiltiy frames - although hits after the first only deal 75% damage. Only attacks from a single combo will hit and reset an enemy's invulnerabiltiy frames, attacking with a different combo or an attack not part of the combo will have boss invulnerability frames work as normal. (For Plasma Blender, as it technically doesn't combo, boss invulnerability frames are halved instead.)

Primary Weapons

Hawk

Hawk

Starting Gear The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon

Protorifle (20XX).png Protorifle

Hawk is the first DLC character released for 20XX, serving as the game's Power specialist. She starts with 8 Maximum Health, 8 Maximum Energy and -5 Power Strength. In exchange, her weapon The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon lets her leech energy from enemies, allowing her to use Powers far more often than other characters can.

In the PC version of the game, Hawk is DLC. In the Console version, Hawk can be unlocked by beating the game as any character in any mode except Rush Job.

Rather than having 5 different Primary Weapons to obtain from Diamond Chests, Hawk instead starts with a unique Power (the Protorifle (20XX).png Protorifle) in addition to The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon, and her four other unique Powers drop from Diamond Chests. (Like Nina and Ace, Hawk can only carry up to 8 Powers at a time.)

Draco

Volt Edge (20XX).png Volt Edge

Draco is the second DLC character released for 20XX, serving as the game's Primary Weapons specialist. He starts with only 4 Maximum Energy. Unlike the other characters, Draco does not charge his weapons normally - instead, he automatically builds up to 2 Dracocharges (at a rate of 1 every 2 seconds), which can be consumed to fire a charged shot instantly. Unlike the other characters, Draco can carry up to 8 different Primary Weapons at any time, but can only carry a single Power. Additionally, after defeating a boss, the boss' Power has a 50% chance to be replaced by an alternative Primary Weapon, including those normally exclusive to Nina or Ace. However, Draco cannot recieve any of a character's starting weapons, so the N-Buster (20XX).png N-Buster, A-Saber (20XX).png A-Saber and The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon are unavailable to him.

In the PC version of the game, Draco is DLC. In the Console version, Draco can be unlocked by beating the game as any character in any mode except Rush Job.

Stat Mechanics

Each character starts with 8 Maximum Health, 8 Maximum Energy (Nina/Ace/Hawk) or 4 Maximum Energy (Draco), +0 Attack Strength, +0 Power Strength (Nina/Ace/Draco) or -5 Power Strength (Hawk), +0 Run Speed and +0 Jump Height. In terms of stats, +0 of both Strength stats is equivalent to 10 base damage, before multipliers. Each point of Strength above 0 adds 1 base damage, while each point below 0 subtracts 0.5 base damage. Both Strength stats have a lower cap of -18 (equivalent to 1 base damage), but no upper limit.

All level pieces are designed to be completable with all optional extras without any Run Speed or Jump Height upgrades. Each point of Run Speed or Jump Height increases their respective base stat, but has diminishing returns after +8 (half effect), +16 (quarter effect) and +32 (tenth effect). The gains do not diminish any further beyond +32. Run Speed has a lower cap of -5, and Jump Height has a lower cap of -1.

For cases in which stat modifiers would lower a stat below its lower limit, the stat is lowered to its lower limit, and the excess decrease, though it has no effect, continues to be tracked. Subsequent stat increases must neutralize the accumulated excess decrease before they can raise the stat above its lower limit again.

Revenant Characters

Revenant Characters, unlocked upon completing a Defiant run with at least 3 Skulls active, are hard mode versions of the base four characters which start off with inferior stats, have inferior weapons or reduced access to weapons, and are unable to equip Core Augments. In exchange, they have a 50% higher chance of encountering Very Safe Labs, and they gain greater positive effects from Prototypes. Additionally, if a Revenant character is currently in play, shops within a run will sell items for twice the usual price.

To select one of the Revenants, hold UP while selecting the capsule that corresponds to the non-Revenant version of the character.

Vika

Vika

Starting Gear V-Shooter (20XX).png V-Shooter

Vika is the prototype version of Nina, wielding a weapon which functions identically to the N-Buster. She has a 50% penalty to Attack Strength.

Jest

Jest

Starting Gear J-Cutter (20XX).png J-Cutter

Jest is the prototype version of Ace, wielding a weapon which functions identically to the A-Saber. Unlike Vika, the damage penalty is applied to the weapon itself, which allows Jest to use Attack Strength-scaling Repros at full power.

Primary Weapon

Autumn

Autumn

Starting Gear The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon

Autumn is the prototype version of Hawk. Unlike Vika and Jest, Autumn wields the same Primary Weapon as Hawk, The Siphon (20XX).png The Siphon. She has a 50% penalty to Attack Strength, and starts with -10 Power Strength. Additionally, due to Diamond Chests usually not appearing on Revenant runs, Autumn has a 50% chance for a Boss Power to be replaced with one of Hawk's unique Powers.

In the PC version of the game, Autumn is playable as part of the Hawk DLC. Note that the unlock condition for the Revenants must still be met before playing as Autumn.

Dvorac

Dvorac

Starting Gear Unstoppable Force (20XX).png Unstoppable Force

Volt Edge (20XX).png Volt Edge

Dvorac is the prototype version of Draco. Unlike Vika and Jest, Dvorac wields the same Primary Weapons as Draco, and can even pick up alternate Primary Weapons. Dvorac has a 50% penalty to Attack Strength, can only store a single Dracocharge, and only starts with 1 Maximum Energy.

In the PC version of the game, Dvorac is playable as part of the Draco DLC. Note that the unlock condition for the Revenants must still be met before playing as Dvorac.
